I’m sure by now most of us makeup enthusiasts know the importance of eye shadow primers. They help improve color payoff and wear time while smoothing and filling fine lines. But did you know that a lipstick primer can be just as beneficial? Too Faced had come to the lipstick loving girl’s rescue a few years ago with their release of the Lip Insurance primer. Now, they have a brand new primer that delivers a glossy finish instead of matte like the original.
The new Lip Insurance Glossy primer is designed to “enhance shine while perfectly prepping your pout and locking down lip color for longer-lasting wear. A powerful dose of anti-aging peptides increase the appearance of lip fullness and aid in smoothing wrinkles.“- Too Faced. It also boosts shine and helps protect lipstick agains fading and feathering.
It comes in a lipgloss style tube with a doe foot applicator. The formula itself is clear and is very lightweight. It’s a little strange because the formula is kind of dry and it almost feels like you are putting nothing on your lips, but when you rub them together you can feel some moisture there. There is no scent or taste.
Compared to the original Lip Insurance this definitely delivers more of a glossy sheen while still making lipstick last longer. It’s better to use something like this under lipstick to help with hydration instead of regular lip balm, because that can break the lipstick down faster. I tested this with my Too Faced La Creme lipstick in Fuchsia Shock which normally lasts about 3-4 hrs and I feel as though it lengthened the wear time by at least 1 hr if not more. I also tried it with my Melted Lipsticks which are slightly dry and uncomfortable feeling to me and this really helped them feel more comfortable on my lips and even helped the light ones like Melted Peony look better because it didn’t sink into lip lines as much. Just to have a little bit more fun experimenting, I tried it with other matte lipsticks I own and it gave them slightly more of a glossy/vibrant finish.
I made a fun little collage comparing the finishes. It’s a little tough to tell differences in the photos, it is much more noticeable in person and if you are actually wearing them on your lips…
- The top photo shows me just wearing the La Creme lipstick.
- The middle shows me wearing the La Creme over the original lip insurance
- The bottom shows me wearing La Creme over the new glossy lip insurance
Overall, I think the Glossy Lip Insurance is a good product if you want to keep your glossy lipstick’s more true to their original finish or you want to help dry/light lip colors look better on your lips. Is it a necessary product? Not by any means, but I think it is useful to have if you wear a lot of lipsticks and you have fine lines/dry lips. It is priced at $20 for .14 oz and is available exclusively at toofaced.com!
