I want to start of this post with an important story subject that has recently come to light in a New York Times article. It focuses on nail salons and the terrible conditions the workers are in day in and day out many for years at a time, and the awful effects it has on them. All for the sake of beauty. It is a lengthy 2 part article, but it is a great informative read for anyone who is associated/ involved with the beauty industry in any way.
On the flip side, I am also so glad there are companies out there like Julep who strive to break the mold of toxic nail products with their 5 free and new oxygen technology “Color Treat” nail formulas, and only working with natural nails in their salons. I love this letter from Jane, Julep’s CEO, discussing the topic. Thank you Julep!
May Julep | Classic With a Twist:
Anyway, onto this months Julep box…for May I chose the Classic with a Twist box which included 2 polishes (Amanda, Shelby) and one of their new “Feels Like Velvet” Eyeshadow Duos. I also added on 2 polishes (Moni & Denise) and a mystery polish. Note: If you add on 3 things, they include a bonus mystery gift with your order.
Amanda is described as a pink dahlia creme. It is a lovely medium pink with great coverage that was perfect in 2 coats. I feel like I have so many pinks like this, especially from Julep. $14 ($11.20 Maven)
Shelby is described as a navy ink creme. It’s a deep slightly dusty blue that was good in 2 coats. Again, I feel like I have quite a few shades similar to this. $14 ($11.20 Maven)
I chose the 5th Avenue & Broadway duo which includes a matte peach and a metallic rose gold. The peach was slightly light in pigmentation, but could be built up over a primer. The gold was very nicely pigmented and had a soft feel with hardly any fallout. $20
Moni is described as a costal blue creme. This shade is definitely darker than Julep shows on their website, but its a lovely bright and summery robins egg blue. The formula was slightly thin, but 2 coats gave acceptable coverage. $14 ($11.20 Maven)
Denise is described as a purple crocus creme. This got pretty bad reviews, but I think it was mainly due to Julep’s color depiction shown on their site, which is quite different from how it looks in person. It is much more of a violet/blue than the electric looking purple they show. It also dries to a semi-matte finish. I really like the color (like a lot) and got a ton of compliments on it, but I understand peoples frustration with the color discrepancy. $14 ($11.20 Maven)
Becky (Mystery Add-On):
Becky is described as an oil slick duo chrome (silk finish.) This is a pretty duo chrome with a green and purple shift in a grey base. A lot of reviews says is almost identical to Juelp Blakely, minus the silk finish, which I think is also true. Still a great color, and almost do-able in just 1 coat! $14 ($11.20 Maven)
Doublestep (Bonus Add-On):
Doublestep is a shea butter foot treatment that moisturizes, stimulates circulation and helps prevent blisters from shoes. As a lot of the reviews state, the dial doesn’t work, and the product doesn’t turn up. I have to shake it upside down so the stick comes out and apply it that way. It works pretty well, but the packaging makes it a hassle to use. $22 (on a $7.99 spacial…I wonder why)
Overall, I was pretty happy with this box despite some seem-able polish dupes. I LOVE Moni & Denise and the eyeshadow was pretty great too! If you want to sign up to get your own Julep Maven box, use my referral link with code SPRING at checkout to get your first one free! ($3.99 shipping)
