I can’t help but notice that nearly all of the makeup collections for Fall 2015 seem to be coming out with a new line of matte lipsticks. Seriously, it’s like I can’t scroll Instagram without seeing AT LEAST one. I’m not complaining, but as we all know some matte formulas are far better than others. To me, nothing is worse than wearing a matte lipstick and having it feel like you just doused your lips in salt and they are so dry that it hurts.
So, when I saw that Urban Decay released a new Matte Revolution line, I was hoping they got it right because I LOVE their regular Revolution lipsticks and I was dying to try After Dark. While perusing the site the new-ish Mascara Resurrection also caught my eye, so I picked that up too!
My camera wasn’t picking up the full darkness of the lipstick, so it looks a little lighter in my pics of the tube. My hand and lip swatches are color accurate though.
This stuff is interesting for sure. It is meant to revive or soften the old mascara on your lashes so you can add another coat of mascara. I’m going to be honest here and say that I frequently forget (or am too lazy) to remove my mascara most nights. I always wash my face, but taking off my mascara just seems like an unbearable task by the time I’m ready for bed. So, I thought I would see how this revives my “day old mascara.” It can also be used after a long day at work if you want to refresh your mascara without getting it all clumpy before going out.
First off, it smells just like alcohol (not rubbing alcohol, I mean like vodka) but you can really only smell it if you put it up to your nose. It’s slightly difficult to work through the lashes and I think it might have been easier with a straight brush instead of a curved one. Also, if you put too much your lashes start to stick together (like some of mine did in the photo above.) All in all, I think this did help soften lashes but it really isn’t a necessary product unless you are frequently refreshing your mascara after work or like multiple coats. $16 at Ulta.
Matte After Dark
“The Matte Revolution Lipstick features our proprietary Pigment Infusion System™, which gives the formula its super-creamy texture, insane pigmentation and superior color dispersion. We also loaded Matte Revolution Lipstick with a long list of nourishing ingredients, including a blend of avocado, olive and babassu oils.” – UD.com
I got the color After Dark which is a dark berry/pink with a hint of purple sheen. Of course, it is extremely pigmented and applied beautifully with no patchiness or sticking to dry spots. However, the shape of the lipstick made it slightly difficult to get a precise line around the lips, but turning it upside down and using the edge like a liner first helps. It isn’t transfer proof, but it lasts a very long time. I got about 6 hours of wear between light snacking and drinking. It’s a fairly comfortable matte formula, and while it does feel a little bit dry it doesn’t wrinkle my lips or anything like that. I am head over heels for this color and am definitely considering picking up a few more! $22 each.
