Phew! Thanksgiving is now over and it’s time to prep for Christmas! I hope you all had a nice day and ate lots of good food yesterday, I know I did. (I’m still stuffed as I write this.)
In the beauty world especially around Holiday time, it seems like the sales and deals are endless. However, even some of the sale prices of some brands are still quite high. So when I saw these budget friendly $5 beauty products at Walgreens, I wanted to give them a try and see if the low price still yielded a decent product.
Why not, right?
Wet ‘n Wild MegaSlicks Balm Stain 3 pk
I had never tried any of these balm stains before, but I have tried the MegaLast Lipsticks which are more of a matte formula. These Balm Stains are creamy and glossy with an easy application. There are 12 shades available and they retail for $2.99 each if you buy them separately. The shades I got in the 3 pack (which I found on an off shelf holiday display) are:
- Rico Mauve– a medium mauve / rose shade
- Red-Dy or Not– a vibrant warm red
- Lady and the Vamp– a deep berry with brown undertones
They all applied evenly with the exception of Lady and the Vamp which was kind of patchy and seemed a bit more brown toned than I prefer. To fix the patchy issue I used a berry lip liner underneath and blotted lightly with a tissue after applying the balm stain. The color looked better that way too!
These stay glossy and comfortable for about 4 hours, then they start to dry down and they definitely leave a prominent stain behind. It’s not something that bothers me, but it’s something to be aware of for touch up purposes or whatever. Or, you could just throw a lip balm on once the glossy color wears off for a “just bitten” look.
Walgreens Eyeshadow Palette
First off, these are all metallic shades so if that’s not your thing you might want to skip this. Overall, this was a decent palette for $5 and the only shade that was a real dud is the light grey (second to the right) which took some real work to get it to show up as much as it did.
Yes, a lot of the colors are really similar, but if you like basic nude or smoky shades in metallic finishes then this would be a good buy for you. They were all fairly pigmented when applied over a primer and they lasted at least 6 hrs without creasing or fading.
Personally, I think it was $10 well spent and the lip colors really impressed me! The shadows are nice too, but they weren’t anything mind blowing. How much can you expect for $5 though?
