Wow. I haven’t bought any Benefit makeup in forever! Seriously though, my last purchase was almost 3 years ago…
For some reason, most of their products don’t really appeal to me all that much. They have some good staples (like mascara), but for the most part I tend to overlook their new releases. However, the BIG Sexy Lip Kit recently caught my eye, and it looked way too cute for me to pass up. Plus, I had a coupon for $15 off at HSN, so I only ended up paying a little over $16. Also, I have to admit that the concept of a liner + lipstick in one was kind of intriguing… Keep on reading if you think so too!
Benefit BIG Sexy Lip Kit
This set comes packaged in an adorable little tin with labeled slots for each shade. To be honest, the tubes are a little cheap feeling. They have a lightweight plastic-y feel that is similar to their new line of brow products. I kind of wish they put a little less effort into the amazing tin that they come in, and more quality into the actual lipstick tubes…
The tubes are a twist-up style with a teardrop shaped lipstick. As you can see, the tips of the lipstick are a darker shade. This tip is what gives the illusion of “lip liner”, or ombre lips. So, when applying, you always want the darker colored tip to be on the outside edges of your lips. In general, I don’t think they were that difficult to apply. I’ve had more trouble with certain liquid lipsticks.
Here is a shot of the lipstick turned all the way up, so you can see how much you are getting. For reference, when I measured them, they were about 3/4 of an inch. In other words, they are teeny tiny (.02 oz to be exact… the next smallest size mini I have is .05 oz.) They are also very creamy, so by the time I was done my arm & lip swatches there was only about 1/2 an inch of product left.
The colors are pretty, I will give them that. Flame Game is a little to wild for my everyday taste, but the rest of them are very wearable. Like I mentioned above, the formula is very creamy, which makes them comfortable to wear. However, it also means that the lipsticks are on the softer side and the tips tended to wear down faster than the other color. (Which you can kind of see in my next photo.) Also, these have a faint chemical smell. I can really only smell it when I am applying them, but it’s something to be aware of. On average, I got about 4 hours of wear from each color. (Lusty Rose was more like 3 hrs because it has less pigment.)
- FLAME GAME is a fiery orange-red
- PINK THRILLS is a true carnation pink
- REVVED-UP RED is a cherry red
- LUSTY ROSE is a rosy neutral
Can you see how the tips are a bit more worn down? Maybe it’s the angle I’m holding the lipstick at? I don’t know for sure, but I hope it doesn’t keep getting worse. As far as bang for your buck goes, I think this set is a little pricy. I paid $16 so I’m ok with that, but $29 is kind of high in my opinion. My favorite colors here are definitely Lusty Rose & Revved-up Red!
To wrap things up, I think this is a cute little set, but only really worth it if you can get it on sale.
Does the Big Sexy Lip Kit appeal to you, or is it too small for your taste?
