I have wanted to get my hands on some oval makeup brushes since I first laid eyes on them. Just by looking, you can see why they have become one of the latest Instagram trends. They have such a unique shape, and a brush head so fluffy, you just can’t wait to rub it all over your face! haha! Incase the brand is new to you, here is a little background before we get to the brushes.
Makeup Revolution is a London based company that launched in 2014. They strive to offer great quality products at revolutionary prices. Ulta started carrying Makeup Revolution products in 2015, and they are the exclusive retail partner. This is my first time trying oval brushes, as well as anything from Makeup Revolution in general. So, I guess you could say that I was pretty excited to dig in!
Makeup Revolution Precision Contour Brush Set
Makeup Revolution released 7 new oval brushes, and 2 oval brush sets with 3 brushes in each. I have the Precision Contour Set to share, which is for the face, but they also have a set for eye makeup. The Precision Contour Set contains an Oval Face, Oval Cheek, and an Oval Shape brush. The prices of the single brushes range from $8 to $18, which is pretty fair if you ask me. The eye set is $22, so you only save $2 by purchasing as a set. However the face set is $30, which ends up saving you $12 as opposed to purchasing them separately!
Do these brushes remind you of soft, fluffy teddy bears or what?! And yes, they ARE as soft as they look. (I was actually pretty blown away!) While I do like sponges for foundation application, I really do prefer using brushes. (For reference, the Sigma F80 is one of my all time favorites.) The Makeup Revolution Oval Brushes are made from Synthetic Hair.
OK, I’ll just let it out… I love these brushes! Like I already mentioned, they are very soft and feel great against the skin. I typically use a stippling motion to apply my foundation, even with a brush. I feel like it just covers my acne and acne scars better. However, with some brushes, using a stippling motion makes the brush feel rough or scratchy. Not so with these! I am also happy to note, that I have washed them a few times and have had close to zero shedding!
- The Oval Face brush works fantastic for my liquid foundation and I think because it is so dense, it tends to soak up less foundation. This is also the prefect size for a foundation brush in my opinion. They do have a Large Oval Face brush and although I have seen it in person I feel like it would be too big. My only gripe with this brush is the handle. The bottom of the handle is great, but the neck where it connects to the brush head is very thin and weak. The handles are made of plastic, so it feels like if I push too hard it may snap. To prevent this from happening I usually hold the brush by the head area and use it like that. Still works fine for me! (Measures 1 3/8 in wide x 1 7/8 in long.)
- The Oval Cheek brush is a great size for my cheeks. I can do a few swipes up and down, and it always ends up looking great! Unlike the foundation brush, I don’t have a problem with feeling like this brush is going to break. Probably because I don’t use as much pressure when I apply blush. I thought I wouldn’t like a firm blush brush, but it turns out I do! I think it gives my blush more of an airbrushed look. (Measures 3/4 of an inch wide x 1 1/4 in long.)
- Finally, we have the Oval Shape brush which can be used to contour, highlight, or conceal. Personally, I have only used it for highlighting, but I can see it being great for the other uses too. (Measures 1/2 of an inch wide x 7/8 of an inch long.)
Overall, especially considering the price point, I can safely say that I love these brushes! They weren’t as sturdy feeling as I had hoped, but I can definitely work around that. Also, the only other thing I should note, is that they do take a bit longer to dry. I am assuming it is because the bristles are so densely packed. I usually wash my brushes at night and they are dry by morning. However, these weren’t dry until later the following night. Not a huge deal, but its something to be aware of. All in all, I love the look, the super soft bristles, and the airbrushed finish I get from using them. I think these are a great price point for Oval brushes and they won’t break the bank if you are on a budget!
You can find all of the Makeup Revolution Oval Brushes on their website, but I’m hoping they will be in Ulta stores at some point!
